About Our Shalgo Setters

Our goal at Shalgo Setters is to breed strong healthy pups with loving and gentle dispositions, correct confirmation and naturally inherent and enthusiastic hunting instincts. We do not breed for field trials or the show ring. All of our dogs are natural hunters full of high energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to please.

Our breeding females through diet and exercise have a set program in place to see them through their pregnancy and whelping stages. All of which is designed to ensure the quality, size and health of our puppies.

Our litters are whelped in cozy comfort in our acclimatized nursery and our moms are monitored 24/7 before and after delivery in order to facilitate our intervention if and when needed.

Our pups are handled and cuddled against our heart for increasing amounts of time each day from the day they are born to 3 weeks of age. This technique bonds humans to the pup for their lifetime. These puppies become a part of our family from birth until the day they leave for their new homes. We also remove the dewclaws at 3 days of age and each puppy is bathed, blow dried and nail trimmed before they are adopted out.

Our pups are well socialized to other people including children, other animals including birds, cats, other dogs, horses and even the occasional sound of gun fire before they leave us strong and healthy at 7 weeks of age shampooed, vaccinated and wormed.

We also put each puppy through our "Puppy Kindergarten" class so that they are easy to handle when they go home. Ask us about it or visit our FAQ page to learn more.

Our adult dogs and our pups participate in a vaccination and worming program from day one according to their ages also designed to keep them free of disease or parasitic infestations.

We also include our buyers in the development of the pups by e-mailing growth photographs from time to time. This unique program allows our buyers the opportunity to bond with their puppy. By the time you pick-up your puppy at 7 weeks of age, you have already developed a relationship with your pup and can easily pick him/her out of the group.

We want our buyers to be as happy and proud of their new pup as we are whether you are interested in a family pet or an enthusiastic and energetic hunting companion that is uniquely independent and confident.

All of our efforts are directed toward ensuring the health and vitality of the English Setter and Llewellin Setter breeds. Call us for more information (540) 892-5646
